I’m Dr Nelson Amaral – a Private Heart Specialist in London.

How I will work with you

1. Assessment

The consultation is the most important part of your journey. As part of your detailed assessment, I will actively listen to the problems you’ve been experiencing. I’ll ask you lots of questions about your symptoms, lifestyle, and family history.

Next, I’ll conduct a thorough physical examination. I’ll take your blood pressure and pulse, check if you have ankle or leg swelling, and listen to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope.

2. Diagnostic Testing

To confirm your diagnosis, further tests may be required. This may involve blood tests, an ECG or Echocardiogram. If necessary, I will be using advanced diagnostic testing, like a CT or an MRI scan, to diagnose your problems.

3. Treatment

Once your results are available, we’ll go through them, and I’ll explain what they mean. Then, we’ll discuss your treatment options and together agree on your personalised action plan.

I will work with you to optimise your risk factors and lifestyle. Depending on the findings, you may also need to start taking tablets. Sometimes, invasive treatments or surgery may be necessary.

Most importantly, the consultation will leave you with:

  1. A good understanding of your underlying heart problem
  2. What you can expect from the recommended treatments
  3. How to manage your heart health going forward

My Clinical Training & Experience

I studied Medicine at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf (Germany) and the University of Bern (Switzerland), qualifying in 2004.

I carried out my cardiology training in London which included specialist fellowship training at some of the top hospitals in the UK, like King’s College Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital.

I specialise in the assessment and treatment of patients experiencing chest discomfort, shortness of breath, palpitations, and dizziness.

I also have specialist expertise in advanced imaging of the heart, like stress echocardiography and cardiac CT, which allows me to provide comprehensive care for my patients.

I trained in Anaesthetics before specialising in Cardiology and therefore have unique expertise in assessing the heart’s function before an operation.

I specialise in 3 areas:

  • Chest Pain/Angina Pectoris (often due to a narrowing or blockage of your heart arteries)

  • Breathlessness/Shortness of Breath (because of impaired pump function of your heart)

  • Preoperative Cardiac Assessment (heart check-up before you have an operation)

In addition to my clinical training, I completed 2 postgraduate doctorate degrees: an MD(Res) and a PhD.

My research expertise enhances my clinical skills and allows me to practice cardiology at the highest level.

I also hold the rank of Associate Professor (Hon) at University College London and I’m an undergraduate teaching lead at University College London Medical School.
